Let's talk about December 13, 2007, shall we? I know it's late, but it's still boogling my mind after all these years. That's my brother's conviction date. The day he was sentenced up to twenty years in prison for a crime that makes absolutely no sense.
Let's start with the crime then work our way around the facts, shall we? Okay, the crime goes like this (apparently): Two 16-year-old boys were walking down a busy main road in Vandercook, Michigan carrying $3.50 in pop bottles (in the state of Michigan, you get $0.10 for every bottle you return--so they had 35 bottles). So, as they were carrying such a high amount of money on a busy road in the middle of the day with high traffic, my brother decides he needs a pack of cigarettes and decides to assault and steal the bottles, then casually walk about a quarter of a mile down the road (if that far) and turn in the bottles and buy a pack of Newports.
Can we look at the facts now? Okay, no one saw any of this go down. No passerbys stopped to help two allegedly defenseless 16 year old boys from a big, mean 21 year old.... oooooh, scary! Second, when my brother stepped out of our uncle's home (which is in Jackson, close, but not in, Vandercook) he was immediately picked up and not taken directly to jail, but to the "scene" of the crime where the two boys identified him in the back of the car. The door wasn't even opened, and they didn't even approach the vehicle. So yeah, I totally can identify my attacker from the back of a patrol car while standing about 50 meters away from it. I have amazing vision like that. Third, Newports don't cost $3.50. And how the hell did they know Steven walked to the gas station and bought a pack of Newports unless they followed him?
Steven was with my cousin, Marlo, and two girls the day this all went down. Why wasn't Marlo and these girls arrested for being accessories to a crime? Why weren't these girls questioned? OH! That's because on the girls' Myspace pages, they were shown posing with said victims in their "gang." Sound suspicious to you?
That's not even the juicy part. So, the prosecutor of the case said Steven is a leader of a pack, causing youth to go astray. Yeah, that's what he was doing while he was out looking for a job. You know those parents who are trying to raise their 2 year old sons, always corrupting the youth.
I have a question, while Steven was supposedly laying a beat-down on one kid, what the fuck was the other kid doing? Just standing there like a goon? "Oh, you're whooping my friend's ass, I think I'll stand here and do nothing and watch. Take your time, we'll just casually follow you." Here's another question, why didn't these little bastards go to a hospital for any potential injuries? In most robbery cases that victims are attacked in, the police take them to the emergency room for, I dunno... EVIDENCE? Evidence of what? Well, defense wounds to show they tried to either fight off their attacker or protect themselves, and secondly that they were indeed attacked. Yet, these two little fuckers didn't do shit.
Moving on. So, Steven wanted cigarettes, but had to steal for them, eh? If he was going to steal anything it'd be $10 out of my mom's purse as she's taking a piss or a lucy from my older sister's purse. Who the fuck beats down any one for a bag of bottles? In broad daylight? On a busy street? You're joking right?
So, this asshole of a judge that convicted him is the same that convicted him previously (he stole his case from another judge who wasn't even going to sentence Steven seeing how ridiculous this whole case is). So, the judge called him a hoodlum. Steven's lawyer deemed herself ineffective as she had another case to go to, so he said, "8 to 20 years." The end. He senteced him as a habitual criminal. Meaning someone who has committed the same crimes over and over and over again. Steven had ONE prior. Something he took sole blame on for two other boys that were known and one that wasn't even recognized as being involved. And that little bastard had the nerve to come forward and admit he heard the two 16 year olds admit they made up the crime, but instead of giving up his lavish lifestyle on the run from the police (running from Foster Care), he'd rather let someone who did nothing rot in a jail cell for 20 years.
But it's not the 20 year sentence he is serving. He has to finish the 10 year sentence he started with for his first crime (he stole a snowboard, so 10 years for that, plus 20 years for $3.50... so about 30 years in jail over a total of $200).
AND THE PEOPLE OF JACKSON ARE GLAD! You fuckers are retarded! You're wasting your tax dollars on ONE person soaking up at least $20,000 of your tax dollars in ONE YEAR! Oh, but a hardened criminal is off the streets and babies can sleep peacefully at night. Oh please, that drug-infested city should be bombed to rid it off the map. As a matter of fact, half of Michigan should just be done away with because it's a hell hole of a state that's in jobless economy that can't stimulate any funds to help anyone other than the rich.
Enjoy spending your taxes on something that could be helping people, but instead you have a dude in jail for 30 years (a total of $540,000 left if he remains for his remaining 27 years). Idiots.
